UST A BEGINNING: INITIAL ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES

 

Your tests have shown that you have diabetes.

 

A healthy diet is very important to help control your diabetes. Your doctor will arrange for you to see a dietician, who will plan your personal diet with you.

 

Use the tips below to guide you until you see the dietician.

 

General Information

 

Eat regular meals‑ three or four meals every day.

 

Fill up on starchy foods such as potatoes, bread, cereals, rice or pasta at every meal.

 

Try using wholemeal bread, brown rice and wholemeal pastas and wholegrain cereals such as Shredded Wheat, Weetabix, Porridge, Bran Flakes.

 

Eat fresh fruit and vegetables (all kinds).

 

Eat meat, fish, eggs or pulses in normal amounts.

 

Spread butter or margarine thinly and to try to grill foods rather than frying.

 

YOU MAY TAKE THESE FOODS

Sweeteners such as Sweetex, Canderel, Hermesetas

Sugar, Glucose

Reduced sugar fruit spreads e.g. Robertsons, Baxter

Jam, marmalade, honey, treacle

Sugar free fizzy drinks and squashes

Sweetened squashes and fizzy drinks

Plain biscuits e.g. crackers, digestives, rich tea

Cakes, pastries and sweet biscuits

'Diet’ yoghurts or sugar free jelly

Puddings and desserts

Fresh fruit or tinned fruit in natural juice

Tinned fruit in syrup
